Ontario families need affordable child care now: Ontario NDP Child Care critic

Published on February 7, 2019

Doly Begum, Ontario NDP Child Care critic, released the following statement in response to a Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives study finding that Ontario is home to the country’s five most expensive cities for infant care and eight out of 10 of the country’s most expensive cities for preschool care:

“Ontario families are desperate for relief as the cost of child care continues to skyrocket. Parents are putting their careers on hold to look after young kids because they simply can’t afford child care. This issue hurts women most as the gender pay gap persists.

The Liberals let us down by doing nothing to make child care more affordable for 15 long years. Doug Ford’s Conservatives are only going to make life so much worse for families by cramming more kids into spaces with less supervision.

Ontario families deserve safe, affordable, not-for-profit and high-quality child care, and Andrea Horwath and the NDP will keep fighting until all families have access to that.”
